Art and Music—An Evening of Artistic Collaboration!

Tuesday, June 6, 7:00 pm – Please join us for and exciting and powerful evening of shared cultures and artistic collaboration. Rabbi Harry and artist Virgil Sampson of the Tsartlip Nation will be unveiling and releasing for sale the result of their cultural and creative collaboration.  We are also honoured that they will be joined by soprano Jaclyn Grossman, who will be entertaining us with Hebrew and Yiddish songs. Refreshments will be served.

Rabbi Harry and artist Virgil Sampson have worked together on creating a powerful art print that combines cultural and aesthetic iconography to produce “Magen,” which in Hebrew means, “Protection.”  The piece combines the Hamsa, a symbol that is shared by many peoples of the Middle East that serves as a talisman or amulet against the evil eye (bad mojo that comes to us when we invoke the envy of others), and an Orcawhich is a Coast Salish symbol of protection.  After Virgil and Rabbi Harry shared intense dialogue and learning, Virgil created this striking and innovative work of art.  After consultation with elders and other rabbis, both Virgil and Rabbi Harry feel that this work of collaboration and connection is in the spirit of reconciliation that begins with sharing.

There are limited edition prints that are available for sale through Emanu-El.  Join us as we unveil this remarkable work and learn about the spiritual and creative synergies that are present in this innovative and striking work of art.

We are also very pleased to announce that Jaclyn Grossman will join us to sing from her repertoire of Hebrew and Yiddish songs. Hailed as an “exciting dramatic soprano” (Opera Canada), Jaclyn is an extraordinary artist. This year, she is a Resident Artist with Pacific Opera Victoria’s Civic Engagement Residency. (Please view her website https://www.jaclyngrossman.com/ to learn about her work and her upcoming Victoria performances of Jewish music.)

7:00 pm June 6 in the Sanctuary.  There will be an opportunity to bid on first editions and special Remarque prints embellished by Virgil.
