Avodah was thrilled to celebrate Ḥanukkah at Our Place by sponsoring our 5th annual Big Latkelicious Lunch at Our Place on the second day of Ḥanukkah, December 13, 2017. Our magnificent Avodah volunteers, led by Daryl Levine, fried, shvitzed and served more than 600 latkes, with The Klez playing their freilach klezmer music and Bev Merson conducting her popular dreidel competition.
It was a joyful way to share our Ḥanukkah spirit, light and latkes with our good friends at Our Place, who welcomed us (and our latkes) into their kitchen and dining room with so much warmth and excitement.
Healing from addictions is an ongoing process, as anyone who has struggled knows. The SMART Recovery Program gives Our Place family members real-time tools to use as they move ahead with their recovery. Resilience, determination, support and hope do the rest. Your ongoing financial support makes our participation in this program possible. We couldn’t do it without you! Thank you!
Many of the Our Place family struggle to find transportation to appointments with the doctor, the dentist, the hospital, social services, the parole officer, job interviews and even to visit with family.
Dropping off a few Victoria transit bus tickets allows our Spiritual Care Team to say “yes” when asked for transportation to important destinations.
Please drop off your tickets at the Our Place Reception desk at 919 Pandora Ave. Please put them in an envelope marked “Spiritual Care” to ensure we received them in our office. Thank you for your continuing generosity to the Our Place family.
In response to Our Place’s request for donations of mitts a few weeks ago, Frances Aknai knitted 3 pairs of mitts that she delivered earlier this week. This is the response she received:
“The mittens are perfect, thank you so much. Many of our older family members have terrible arthritis in their hands and cannot open their fingers to fit into gloves.
It breaks my heart to have no mittens to give them when they ask me. This winter has been very harsh for those family members. Thank you for your generosity. I wish you could see the smiles when I was able to give out mittens. "Thank you so much again.” – Oceanna Hall Spiritual Care – Our Place

Avodah put on its fourth annual Big Latke Lunch at Our Place over Hanukkah. This wonderful collaborative event brought much light, warmth as well as delicious latkes to Our Place. It is “our favourite here at Our Place”, says Our Place’s Tracy Campbell.
Avodah’s enthusiastic volunteers, under the expert supervision of Daryl Levine, and supported by Our Place staff, took over the kitchen during Hanukkah to fry up and serve latkes for some 350 of Victoria’s most vulnerable citizens. The Klez performed its magic and Bev Merson brought her special dreidel board – adding much freilach spirit to the lunchtime celebration. Sheila Tennenhouse’s ḥanukkiah added a special joyful glow as did the miraculous travelling Hanukkah vest.
