Scribbles from Hebrew school

HS Hanukkah BashEmanu-El Hebrew School ended 2017 on a high note with a joyful community Ḥanukkah Bash on December 10. The children were inspired by the numerous craft stations and excited by a musical flight around the world piloted by Major Conrad Flaps, clown and violinist extraordinaire. The party was awed upon landing by a beautiful lighting of the Noah’s Ark Ḥanukkiah and delicious latkes.

Simcha Todah Rabah

Many thanks to everyone who supported the Hebrew School by purchasing their Ḥanukkah goods through our Simcha gift store. We are looking forward to our Hebrew School’s main fundraiser in March, the Pesach Market. Please watch for upcoming info on Pesach Market dates; we’ll be selling all of your favourite holiday items!

And there was light

The greatest "kippukiah" in the world IRabbi Harry lead a lighted procession from the synagogue to Centennial Square where the Victoria High Rhythm and Blues Band were warming up the crowd…

This year the privilege of lighting the Ḥanukkiah went to the children at Congregation Emanu-El’s public lighting on December 19. As it was the last night of Ḥanukkah, there were lots of delighted children.

The children’s lighting, the music, the dancing, the communal spirit and the sufganiot brought joy to those brave comers who were undaunted by the weather. Todah rabah to Aaron and his team and Shout it out for Victoria High Rhythm and Blues Band who were fabulous.

Avodah celebrates Ḥanukkah at Our Place

CBC’s Khalil Akhtar pursues the perfect latke!Avodah was thrilled to celebrate Ḥanukkah at Our Place by sponsoring our 5th annual Big Latkelicious Lunch at Our Place on the second day of Ḥanukkah, December 13, 2017. Our magnificent Avodah volunteers, led by Daryl Levine, fried, shvitzed and served more than 600 latkes, with The Klez playing their freilach klezmer music and Bev Merson conducting her popular dreidel competition.

It was a joyful way to share our Ḥanukkah spirit, light and latkes with our good friends at Our Place, who welcomed us (and our latkes) into their kitchen and dining room with so much warmth and excitement.
