Organic Apple Juice Hebrew School Fundraiser

From CastleRock Pardes  Farm — Made from a mixture of crisp Spartan, Red Delicious, MacIntosh and Granny Smith apples, this apple juice has been filtered and passed through UV cold pasteurization, retaining its exquisite complex taste and total nutritional value. The jugs can be frozen and imbibed throughout the year.  Fill your freezer!!

We Did It!

Thanks to so many members of our congregational family we have achieved our Emergency Capital Campaign goal. A huge Thank You to all the donors who through their action gave a strong voice of support to the progressive dynamic Jewish life that characterizes Congregation Emanu-El. By putting our money where our mouths are and making this campaign a success, we have shown that we are prudent stewards of this remarkable synagogue.
Now we have a new refrigerator condenser/compressor, new masonry around South side of the sanctuary, a new heating, cooling and ventilation system for our “new” building and are in the process of replacing the 15 year old “new” building’s roof.

Kol Hakavod – Hebrew kudos to the entire congregation and friends of our congregation.

Dance for the Children Fundraiser

Saturday, September 29 7:30 – 10:30 pm at Saanich Silver Threads — Get out your dancing shoes and head for the Saanich Silver Threads, 286 Hampton Road, Victoria, BC V8Z 1H1 (near Tillicum Road) and Dance for the Children, a fundraiser for the Albergue Villa Pinal, a collection of buildings located inland from Melaque MX-JAL operated by Asistencia a la Familia, which serve as residences, a school, and a medical clinic for indigenous Mexicans families from the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca who migrate during the winter months to work picking crops in the fields around Melaque.

Doors will open for Dance for the Children at 7:15 pm, Salsa class at 7:30 pm, dance until 10:30 pm with DJ “Pachanguero”, class with John De Pfyffer, Latin and ballroom music, maybe some live too.  There will be other surprises like a little Zumba with Roz!

ECC – close but no cigar!

Ḥaverim Shalom:
Just want to give you the latest update on our Emergency Capital Campaign (ECC). At this juncture we have raised eighty six thousand dollars for which we send a super heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated. We are so very close to our grand goal of one hundred thousand dollars.

The masonry work is complete, our new heating/air conditioning and ventilation system is in place and working which to quote my grandmother “it is a mechayah.”  For those of us who are new to Yiddish a mechayah is a small life affirming gift.  I remember my grandmother sitting with friends on a side street in Brooklyn and when a cool breeze off the ocean would come they would all raise their arms and say, “Such a mechayah!”

The new roof is nearly complete and soon the compressor will be up and running. Our house chair Todd Golumbia deserves a shout-out in thanks.  If you have not given yet, it is not too late. We can really use your help. Right now our grade as far as collective generosity is a B+ which with some more help we can turn this emergency campaign into an A+.  Help make this a year of living generously and please donate.

Update: Emergency Capital Campaign

Ḥaverim Shalom: We have raised approximately $70,000 in donations and pledges up till now. We hope to raise enough to cover the costs of the renovation work and equipment replacement which will total approximately $100,000. We are ‘super’ close and the work is already underway. Currently the masonry work is proceeding so we can soon move on to replacing the roof shingles. Once that is complete, we can begin work on our new heating, air conditioning and ventilation unit and move the new refrigeration compressor to the roof which will keep the kitchen quieter and cooler.

If you haven’t had the chance to sit down and figure out your ‘tzedakah’ accounting for the remainder of 5778, this emergency campaign is a fantastic way to see your donation make a huge difference for our congregation. Every dollar counts and every dollar makes a huge difference. If you have already given, we thank you for your generosity; the congregation leadership is currently devising some creative ways to express our gratitude. We are $30,000 short of covering the costs of the needed work. Please show that together we are wise and caring stewards of our wonderful synagogue by filling that gap.

Please help!

An unfortunate thing has happened to one of our Hebrew School families. Sadly, on Friday evening they experienced a fire in their home and lost much. They are temporarily living in the home of one of our congregants. We want/need to give them as much support as we can. Any financial assistance would be greatly appreciated. All contributions should be sent to the synagogue for the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund/Fire.

Syrian family fundraiser dinner a success

Three Miracles for Our Syrian Family

The first miracle: the June 29 Syrian fundraiser dinner/ḥaflah was a culinary treat and financial success. We raised nearly enough funds to pay off government loans for both families. Thanks to all who attended and made generous donations.

The
second miracle: Last week, Ubaydah, Samar and Faruq were
interviewed and accepted as new members of the Tyee Housing Co-op. This will
provide housing security for the Rashid family, and reduce their monthly rent
expense considerably. Timing is excellent, as they will move in five weeks
before our sponsorship period ends. 
The
third miracle: With the burdensome government loan nearly
resolved, and housing security achieved, we have been fervently hoping Ubaydah
could meet the next great challenge – an initial full-time job. And he has done
just that.  On
July 4, Ubaydah had a job interview, and on July 5, he started work. What a
marvellous ten days for this family!

“Song of Poets”

A lively and thought provoking fundraiser for Congregation Emanu-El and for its Syrian Refugee Family Sponsorship Project on Sunday, February 21 at 2:00 pm (Doors open at 1:30 pm.) Admission is by donation. Light refreshments will be served.

The program will feature original poetry by Judith Castle, Dvora Levin, Isa Milman and Barbara Pelman who are published poets, and music by The Klez, reflecting the essence of the poetry.
