Eryn Sharpe Trio with Ashley Wey, July 12th

Eryn Sharpe writes:

Please join the Eryn Sharpe Trio, as we team up with Ashley Wey on Piano to take our sound to a whole new level, in a whole new place.  Our Roots and Wings show will showcase our Jazz, R+B, and Contemporary musical roots and allow some of our own compositions to take flight.  We are all very excited to enjoy the sizzle of a hot summer night in Hermann’s Jazz Club and hope you can join us for our first feature performance!
It’s been one year since Leon, Nick and I felt things ‘click’ musically and formed the trio.  Since then, we’ve been keeping a low profile, honing our sound and making friends.  Now it’s time for us to come together, celebrate our journey so far, and open up some new musical possibilities with the addition of Ashley Wey.

We rehearsed as a quartet for the first time last night and we, once again, really felt something ‘click.’ Ashley adds a swing, polish, and energy which really elevate the sound of the group.  I’m excited!

We are also going to be welcoming a couple of surprise guests to help us celebrate our musical roots.  Now all we need are some nice people who are able to come by and share the joy of making music on a summer night.  I hope you are one of them.

Seating is limited so please RSVP to this email so we can reserve you a table! Ticket prices are $20/$15 for students and seniors. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8pm.

Thanks, Eryn

Keshet Krewe Rules Pride!

Congregation Emanu-El was out and proud on July 6. Our enthusiastic Keshet Krewe formed a double minyan as we marched along Government Street with the 150th banner, which had been tweaked for the occasion. Rabbi Harry provided lots of ruaḥ, getting us all to accompany him in rousing song. We had the bystanders clapping along more than once to Havah Nagilah, among other tunes. We were pleasantly surprised to have people cheer and clap as we walked by, and more than once they came up to say how much they liked our banner.
The best part was the broad cross section of synagogue members of every age showing their pride for family members, friends, partners, you name it. What a wonderful way to express our pride as welcoming, supportive Jews in such a fun atmosphere.
Beautiful weather, High spirits, Waving, shouting Happy Pride to each other, singing, laughing. Victoria rocks! The parade is bigger and better every year, and as Rabbi Harry said at the end while we were wrapping up: Next year we want to at least double our numbers!
Kol haKavod to all the marchers!
News press release stated,

A group of about 25 members of the congregation gathered on Sunday, July 6, 2014 to help celebrate LGBTQ Pride Week and to announce ourselves as members of and/or allies to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities in Victoria. It was the first time that the Congregation has organized a contingent to march in the Pride parade — and it was fun!

City Hall Comes to Emanu-El

On Sunday June 1 at 2:30 pm, we will have an opportunity to meet and dialogue with our Mayor, Dean Fortin, and our new Chief of Police, Frank Elsner.

We will be gathering in an informal setting to discuss what is working in our city and what areas of civic life are challenging. It is also an opportunity to understand the unique role our congregation plays in the downtown core and make our relationship with City Hall even closer.

We will provide refreshments, and we ask that you provide questions, concerns and a welcome to our mayor and chief of police.

Father’s Kiddush – January 18, 2014

Nine women in the Emanu-El community share a yahrzeit for their fathers in and around  parashat Yitro. This year we again honour our fathers by contributing to the service and hosting a small kiddush after. It is particularly fitting that the yahrzeit is at this time, as the parashah has some important fatherly references: Moses’ father-in-law Jethro (Yitro) gives him wise political advice, and the Ten Commandments is re-iterated, reminding us to honour, to give kavod to our fathers and our mothers.

The women involved in the Kiddush include: Janis Diner Brinley, Sharon Fitch, Janna Ginsberg, Shoshana Litman, Isa Milman, Sepora Mayim, Barbara Pelman, Jackie Saunders-Ritchie, Sheila Tennenhouse, and Penny Tennenhouse. There will be a special Prayer for the Poor, written by Penny Tennenhouse, added to the prayers.

We hope that you can join us, to remember and to honour our beloved fathers, and fathers everywhere.
