Our Place is staffing and partially funding a transitional residence called My Place. This off-shoot presently houses 44 men and 4 women. The dormitory-style area is a large gym, divided into 48 small spaces, surrounded by fairly low curtains. In each cubby there is a bed and, fitting underneath, a large plastic bin to hold personal items. The residents may stay for an indefinite time, hopefully moving from here to housing. Burnside Gorge Community Association is one of the organizations that your contributions to Avodah support. Avodah receives regular reports from them on how our donations benefit their clients.
Here is a portion of a letter Avodah received in June from the Family Housing Outreach Workers from Burnside Gorge. Continue reading Thank you so much, Avodah!
On June 19, a Love Your Neighbour Benefit Concert was held in the Congregation Emanu-El sanctuary for support of our Avodah Social Action Group. We were privileged to have The Klezbians as our musical headliner, and they did not disappoint. Audience members enjoyed and sang along, too, during the various Eastern European Jewish folk tunes offered up. In addition, Maggidah (Jewish female storyteller) Shoshana Litman, accompanied by Joe Hatherill on piano, enraptured the audience with both stories and songs. The musical group Kouskous also made a guest appearance.
It was a fun, inspiring, and memorable evening. Monies raised will go towards the many worthwhile social action/social justice projects that Avodah sponsors in the homeless and marginalized community. Loving one’s neighbour means providing these services with compassion, dignity, and respect for the whole individual.
Lastly, a big todah rabah (thank you) goes out to our performers, volunteers – and generous audience. Click here to view photos taken by Penny Tennenhouse.

There is a box in the area between the social hall and the Sanctuary, labeled AVODAH, where people can leave necessities for our neighbours who are struggling on the street and in shelters. Continue reading Avodah asks – please remember our necessities box
Yesterday, Avodah gave six polar fleece blankets to Rev Al (Victoria Dandelion Society). He responded by saying that these blankets save lives.
”My thanks go out to Avodah and Congregation Emanu-El for their generous gift of blankets which could not have come at a better time of year. This particular week is going to be very cold and there are still many sleeping out on our streets. If another appeal for blankets could be put out to your congregation at this time it would also be gratefully received…My deepest thanks”
Avodah asks that you help them to respond to Rev Al’s request for more blankets for our homeless neighbours. When Avodah buys the washable fleece fabric and cuts it to size, the cost per blanket is approximately $20 which means $500 will help keep 25 people warm and $1,000 will help 50 people face the cold nights. The need is great. Please help fund our blanket drive. When you make a donation to the synagogue by cheque, please write “Avodah blanket drive” at the bottom of your cheque.
A beautiful day as Avodah celebrated their sixth annual Ḥanukkah Big Latke Lunch with their friends at Our Place on Thursday, December 6, 2018. Avodah’s wonderful volunteers fried and fried and served and served hundreds of hot latkes, while they lit the candles on our fabulous ḥanukkiah, spilt dreidel and The Klezbians added to the joy with their freylekh klezmer music.
Let Avodah know that you want to share in their work by making a donation…
“Brrrr it’s cold out!” As the days have become shorter and the cold and wet nights longer, our thoughts are with our less fortunate, vulnerable friends in Victoria.
Presently, Avodah provides support through our ongoing commitments to these local agencies:
- Burnside Gorge Community Association
- Our Place Society
- Out of the Rain
- Quadra Village Community Centre
Additionally Avodah has had special projects like providing sleeping bags to the Dandelion Society and, last year, delivering over 325 pairs of underwear to numerous small groups.
We rely on the generosity of congregants and friends to continue this work and to increase our commitments.
Please consider making an end-of-year donation to our shul’s social action group, Avodah.
On or before December 9, 2018 — Avodah invites you to bring 8 items – one for each night of Ḥanukkah to the Menorah Lighting in Centennial Square, Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 5:00 pm or to the synagogue office during office hours.
