Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 pm, Congregation Emanu-El, 1461 Blanshard Street — Congregation Emanu-El (CEE) Adult Education Committee is pleased to present the closing event of the 2018 Victoria SALT New Music Festival at the synagogue on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 pm. The program will feature an introductory talk by CEE member and composer Dániel Péter Biró about Baruch Spinoza and the Amsterdam Portuguese Synagogue. A concert featuring musicians from Heidelberg will follow the talk.Directed by Walter Nussbaum, the instrumental Ensemble Aisthesis will perform a section of Ethica, Biró’s large-scale composition inspired by Baruch Spinoza, followed by the vocal ensemble Schola Heidelberg performance of choral works composed by Gideon Klein during his internment in the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

About SALT: It is not an acronym. It is a reference to the mineral that is necessary for taste and for survival. The impresarios who introduced this festival in 2010 for the celebration of new music conceived its offerings as something that might obviate the blandness of every day contemporary musical fare.
