The Original Deed by Sid Tafler is a two-act play that will be staged at Congregation Emanu-El on November 15, 16, 18 and 19, 2017. There will be Open auditions (9 characters) at Langham Court Theatre Rehearsal Room, (enter through stage door at back) 805 Langham Court Victoria on Sunday, September 17 and Monday, September 18, 7-10 pm. Callbacks: Wednesday, September 20, 7-10 pm.
Plot: Sam Abelman is haunted by the memory of the burning of his boyhood synagogue and his escape from the deportations that destroyed his family in Nazi Germany. Now in his twilight years, he desperately wants to save another synagogue — the old Emanu-El temple in Victoria — as his son Morris plans to sell the building and move the community to the suburbs. As the conflict intensifies, Sam’s wife Rivka, his younger son Jack, his granddaughter Ellie, even his lawyer Phil intercede to make peace or stir the pot till it overflows. When all seems lost, the old building destined for the wrecking ball, Sam invokes the original deed as a ghostly figure from his past emerges to salvage his dream and his memories.

Rivka Abelman, 50s, Sam’s wife, consoler, love of his life and redeemer, also a survivor who lost her entire family.
